Animals & The Zoning Code

9 03 2010

There are many exciting changes being proposed in the City of Flagstaff Zoning Code Re-write, a few of which involve the keeping of animals within the City.  The regulations concerning the keeping of horses would basically remain the same, with the main proposal being to expand this category to include all hoofed animals, with the exception of swine.  This would therefore include mules, donkeys, goats, sheep, alpacas, llamas, etc.  The keeping of domestic animals is proposed to allow for four dogs, four cats and five rabbits per residence, with the total number of domestic animals not to exceed 13 per residence.  The other proposal involves the keeping of fowl, which would allow for a maximum of six chicken hens or ducks on any one parcel.  Fowl would not be permitted within 15 feet of any property line (including any coop, etc.) and male fowl of any kind would not be permitted.  These proposals are largely based upon comments and suggestions received from the public. If you have comments about these changes, please feel free to leave them below.

I am very excited that the city is finally realizing the benefits of keeping a small chicken coop for families! I think this change will benefit many.
